5 celebrities who had us beaming with pride this week | Life (2024)

There's no denying the fact that 2017 has been the year of celebrity milestones and iconic moments both locally and internationally.

But in the midst of a good ol' dose of celebrity gossip and bad exposure, it's sometimes easy to miss the little bit of magic still happening.

I mean, we're at a point where if we now see a household name in a headline we immediately fear we may have to cancel yet another fave. Especially over the last few weeks.

But fret not because every now and then we're reminded why we support these celebrated faces in the first place.

Lena Dunham aside, I think it's almost safe to say that this week had good publicity only.

And these were our favourite moments:

Rihanna for Vogue Paris

Every week is a RiRi week, so this comes as no surprise. On Tuesday she wowed her Instagram followers when she announced that not only is she on three different covers, she is also the guest editor for the December/January issue of Vogue Paris.

The covers were shot by three different photographers;Jean-Paul Goude, Juergen Teller and photography duo Inez & Vinoodh. And they were also styled by different stylists, who have made it so difficult for us to pick a favourite.

Oh but that's not all. Dazed magazine has also given our Bajan Princess multiple covers for their December issue.

Not three, but four! Making that a total of seven iconic images to bless the month of December.

This Winter '17 issue is themed "Nocturnal Activities" and it's shot by Harley Weir. We really hope that yellow eyeshadow will be dropping on Fenty Beauty too.

Thuso Mbedu's International Emmy Award nomination

The Is'thunzi actress represented South Africa on the 45th Annual International Emmy Awards red carpet on Tuesday evening.

She may have not taken home the award, but it's an amazing feat for a local star as young as Mbedu to be deemed worthy of such recognition.

Thuso strutted down the red carpet in a Gert-Johan Coetzee gown and her nominees' medal.

The business mogul took to Twitter to call for the release of Cyntoia Brown, who was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder in Tennessee in 2004 after she fatally shot a 43-year-old man who had hired her for sex when she was 16 years old.

In her tweet, Kim also mentioned that she has called on some help from her attorneys to see how they can intervene.

The two Swedish singers have signed a letter which calls for action against violence on women in the music industry.

According to i-D, Zara Larsson, First Aid Kit, and Nina Persson (from the Cardigans) are among the women who are in support of this open letter, which "highlights a deeply embedded culture of harassment and discrimination in the industry."

The full letter includes the following powerful statement:

“We will no longer be silent. We demand zero tolerance for sexual exploitation or violence. Sexual assault or violence will have consequence in terms of termination of contracts. We will put shame back where it belongs -- with the perpetrators and the people protecting them.”

“We know who you are.”

Bonang at the Global Gift Gala

The ever-slaying MoGhelrubbed shoulders with the likes of Eva Longoria and Maria Bravo at the Global Gift Gala in London on Sunday.

While owning the red carpet is no difficult feat for Miss Matheba, what we love about her latest red carpet appearance is that it was for a good cause.

The Global Gift Gala is an international fundraising initiative which aims to better the lives of children, women, and families in need. Eva Longoria and Victoria Beckham are honorary chairs of this glam and well-meaning global event.

It's always so motivating to see our local celebrities holding their own at highly-esteemed international events and Bonang really didn't disappoint.
